Tubal Ligation Reversal and Positive Pregnancy Test

When a woman has had tubal reversal surgery in order to restore fertility is very important that she keeps an eye on her monthly cycles. Although many women do not have to be told this, it is important that early pregnancy be monitored to rule out ectopic pregnancy. Ectopic pregnancy is when the fertilized egg implants in one of the fallopian tubes and not in the uterus. This can be very dangerous and if left untreated can lead to hemorrhaging and even death. Although the risk of ectopic pregnancy is only slightly higher following tubal reversal surgery it does happen and should be ruled out with each pregnancy.

When a tubal reversal patient misses her period it is important that she test with a home pregnancy test. Once this test comes back positive she should call her physician right away. At this point the physician will order blood tests. These blood tests should be repeated every two to three days. What these tests measure is the amount of HCG that the body is producing. The numbers should double with each test. If the numbers are doubling then the body is producing the HCG. If the numbers do not double, this could be the signs of an impending ectopic pregnancy. Once the HCG numbers reach 1500 the physician will then order a vaginal ultrasound. This is the ultrasound where the egg should be seen implanted in the uterus.

The very beginning of the pregnancy when the Early Pregnancy Protocol is being followed can be very hard for the newly expecting couple. Each day seems like it takes forever and waiting for the results of the newest blood draw can be very frustrating. Couples breathe easier when the baby is finally spotted in the uterus. The rest of the pregnancy can be enjoyed and the joyous news can then be shared with those that the couple wants to tell.

There may be things in the pregnancy that come up such as spotting. When things like this happen it is important that the physician be notified as soon as possible. Although it may not be serious it is better to be safe.

Having support while going through the tubal reversal journey can make a big difference. Couples that have travelled the journey know how emotional it can be at times. The journey has its great moments and its moments of frustration it is just easier being able to discuss it with those that understand.
